Sex offenses have also become the most prevalent, high-stakes accusations today. I represent many people who, in the midst of a divorce, are suddenly accused of a sex crime. I cannot over-emphasize how serious the consequences of these offenses are, and how crucial it is to fight them every step of the way. If a person is convicted, prison time is almost a certainty. There are also a labyrinth of reporting and lifetime registration requirements-- even neighborhood notification and publication of the accused's photo on the internet. Many times, if good counsel is retained in the very beginning, formal charges are not filed. A word of warning-- this is a very complex area of the law and you should only retain an attorney that has lots of experience in dealing with these specific offenses. The prosecutors know who these lawyers are, and eat the others alive. I spent my last year at the state attorney's office in the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Special Prosecution Unit. Since leaving the state in 1993, defending citizens accused of these offenses has been a significant part of my practice, and a successful part of it as well.
